Why a Cuckoo Clock, Part I

The question is a valid one. So many of us are never far from cell phones or devices which easily give us the time in bold digits. We don’t have to hang anything or remember to wind it or set it as the seasons change.

I sound like the worst sales person for my wares but am far from it. The beautiful wooden case, carefully carved by someone of skill, is the lure of the cuckoo. So is the rhythmic ticking and calling of the bird, when we have hung it and set it.
I marvel at the complex working of gears, keeping time without technologies that are both throw away and yet far away from the understanding of most people.
Cuckoo clocks utilize gears, which have been engineered first by ancient peoples, to order and understand their worlds.
This is exciting to me and comforting.
