To Wind Daily or Weekly, That is the Question
I have no answers. Similar to the question of cuckoo clock value, if the clock is sound and well maintained, the value is simply what value it holds for you. Something that makes it’s presence known in our homes—-or once the homes of our parents or grandparents—cannot be measured in bare and base ways.
Likewise, the differences between a cuckoo with a one day movement versus and eight day movement, can be explained in cut and dry ways, but your preference for one versus the other is a partial as everything else about our personality. In short, you answer the question.
A one day movement must be wound once daily as the majority of our personal clocks are. It is part of the routine, like all the myriad other things we do and maintain daily. Practically, the smaller one day movement also requires lighter weights to power it.
An eight day movement is generally wound once weekly—-a useful thing for people who are away from their home on a more frequent basis. Eight day movements are featured more commonly in traditional, not chalet style, cuckoos but they are available in both.
With additional gears on the time and cuckoo clock sides of the movement and a different gear ratio, larger weights are needed to power the eight day.
Essentially that is it for the question : which do you prefer? Which will you remember? We are here with both.
